Professional Profile

I am often asked what motivated me to study medicine, the answer lies in my upbringing. At a young age, growing up in India, I saw numerous disparities in health and health care and unfortunately my family was also affected. I was always more keen to learn about the human body and functions, which led me to volunteer with multiple medical services offered in the villages of India. This fueled my interest to pursue the field of medicine.

Unfortunately, after my family immigrated to the United States, I saw the same medical disparities but at different levels — especially for new immigrants who are uninsured and also for low income socio-economic groups. At that time, I promised myself to achieve my goal of becoming a physician and make an impact on the society by serving humanity.

Internal medicine gives me the opportunity to make that impact. Not only am I a doctor who manages diseases, but I am also doctor who prevents diseases, whether through educational means or through my initiatives in the field of medicine. I truly enjoy medicine and continually learn about the human body and how it functions as a whole. This has helped to develop me into a complete doctor.

When I see my patients, I want to share with them that I am first a friend, a neighbor, a human and only then a doctor. I am an active listener, who is caring, compassionate, respectful and empathetic. I like to involve my patient 100 percent in their medical decision making (collaborative effort) and I am a big believer in patient education and in the “teach back” method.

When I’m not working, I like to spend my time with my children, cooking, gardening, hiking, and riding bicycles.
